TRANSPORTATION ISSUES

Since 2002, a process has been underway to redevelop Denver's Union Station and the surrounding 19.5 acre site into a new multi-modal transit center.  In addition to forming the hub of the region's "Fastracks" system, DUS will include a new underground bus station to replace the facility currently located at Market and 16th Streets, and will continue to serve Amtrak and the Ski Train.  The City of Denver, the Regional Transportation District, the Colorado Department of Transportation, and the Denver Regional Council of Governments, are cooperating to bring this transformation about.

In 2004, a master plan was adopted for the project, and new zoning was approved for the 19.5 acre site.  In 2007, the master plan was amended to reflect an expanded "transit district," in which the light rail station will be located at the consolidated main line, with the underground bus station forming a link between the historic station itself and the light rail stop at the CML.

In 2006, a joint venture formed by Continuum Partners and East West Partners, called the Union Station Neighborhood Company, was selected as master developer for the project.  Union Station Neighborhood Company will manage the construction of the infrastructure improvements, and will be responsible for new vertical development on the site.

Throughout the planning process for this project, LoDoNA has been represented on the Union Station Advisory Committee, a 96-person citizen advisory committee that was formed to provide oversight and input into the project.

Additional information about the Union Station redevelopment, including the master plan, the environmental review process, and the calendar of citizen advisory meetings, can be found at www.DenverUnionStation.org.
